Havdalah (Zoom)
Saturday, April 30, 7:30 PM
Please celebrate Zoom Havdalah here.
Zoom Meeting ID: 320 3406 647.
What will I need?
Just yourself! However, if you would like to participate in blessings at home, Havdalah blessings are said over wine, besamim (fragrant spices), and a braided Havdalah candle.
What if I don't have those things?
If you don't have a Havdalah candle at home, you can use two candles (or even two matches) joining the flames as the blessing is recited. And if you do not have wine, it can be substituted with something you might use to celebrate or offer to a guest, perhaps coffee or tea. And, most importantly, if you don't have any of these things, just come to say blessings and be together. You can find the Havdalah blessings here.

Arrivals: A Seattle Love Story (In Person)
Monday, May 2, 7:00 PM
The Seattle Jewish Theater Company is performing the historically-based play, Arrivals: A Seattle Love Story, at Temple Beth El. Written and directed by SJTC artistic director Art Feinglass, and based on historical events, Arrivals is a Romeo and Juliet love story that unfolds against the backdrop of early-1900’s Seattle and the arrival of the first Sephardic Jewish immigrants.
The year is 1902 when Marco Cordova, a poor young Jew from Turkey, comes to Seattle, the first Sephardic Jew ever to arrive in the city, determined to make his fortune. He soon meets Bayla Keigelman, a fragile young Jewish woman from Russia, who is haunted by memories of a vicious pogrom. Despite the cultural gulf between them, they fall in love but find they must confront forces that declare their love forbidden. To RSVP, please go here. This performance is free and the event is sponsored by Lamed Vav.

Give Big May 3–4: Health Care for All
The theme of Health Care for All is “everyone’s in, nobody out” for residents of Washington State. HCFA has been a supporter of health care bills in the legislature to include health care that is transparent, affordable and accessible. The work is far from done. To continue the work, support is needed. To donate to Health Care for All, you can visit their website here. Learn about their 2nd Wednesday night speaker series, expanding interests in the importance of health care through discussions on issues such as climate change and immigration, homelessness and Washington State immigrated communities, issues that affect the health care of the individual, community and the world.
Our Story, Your Table from the URJ
At the core of many Jewish celebrations are people, stories, and food. These three components highlight our diverse cultures and traditions from around the globe. To mark this Passover and Shavuot season, we’re celebrating the diversity of Jews and Jewish traditions through food and storytelling, in partnership with Be’chol Lashon.
Here, you can watch five unique videos featuring Jews from different cultures sharing their stories while cooking meaningful dishes, and download their recipes to try around your own table. We’re releasing one new experience each week, so keep checking back to see more.
TBE Members—Join the BELC Oversight Committee
BELC is looking for members of Temple Beth El who want to sit on their Oversight Committee. BELC serves up to 49 children, and currently has around 40 families. You can be as involved as you want—they love to have visitors come by reading books to the kiddos, doing art projects, or just hanging out in the classroom. Once a month the whole committee meets with Lindsay Owens (BELC Director) and Christina Roppolo (the Assistant Director) for a general BELC update. They are always looking for ways to build the relationship with the TBE community, as well as ideas for community building within BELC. If you are interested in joining the committee, or at least hearing more about BELC and their needs, please reach out to Patti Steinfield at ramom4@aol.com.
The Diary of Anne Frank at the Lakewood Playhouse (In Person)
Directed by Melanie Gladstone with collaboration and support with historical/religious context from Cantor Fine and Joel Hencken. In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit, and determination. An impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic, The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence—their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief. This is a new adaptation for a new generation. The play runs from Friday, April 15–Sunday, May 8. For more information or to purchase tickets, go here.
Yom HaShoah Yellow Flag Memorial
Our unique Temple Beth El memorial of 6,000 yellow flags honoring the six million Jewish souls lost in the Holocaust makes an enormous impact on the Tacoma community. The memorial needs your help to happen! We are scheduling groups to set up, and then take down this important flag display.
Take down: one-hour timeslots from 1:00–5:00 p.m.
Sunday, May 8–Wednesday, May 10
Please contact Leslie Bright at leslie@tbetacoma.org to sign up for your shift or if you have any questions.
Volunteers Needed for the Temple Tech Team (Soundboard)
The Temple Tech Team desperately needs more volunteers. No experience necessary—training is provided! In addition to training, a step-by-step guide is provided for you. One Friday evening a month is all we ask. To sign up, please contact Jordan Harris at jhhandjnh@aol.com or (253) 414-7237 or Aaron Petersen at aharon.micharl78@gmail.com.
AIDNW/JCIJ—All Temple Members Welcome to Participate
Advocates for Immigrant Justice and Jewish Coalition for Immigrant Justice are collaborating with Temple Beth El to feed newly released detainees from the NW Detention Center in Tacoma. TBE is coordinating 20 sack lunches for the first Thursday of each month. Money and food donations are needed for us to fulfill this obligation!
Please email Mady Plumer at madshell33@icloud.com or call her at (253) 377-4615. This event is sponsored by Sisterhood, but we need participation by any interested TBE member (if you have contacts in any other organization who might be willing to help out, please forward this message to them).
The outreach from some of our temple members as well as individual community members and local churches has been terrific so far, but this is a year long commitment and support is needed on an ongoing basis. Please consider buying the following items which will be needed for the month of May: apples, oranges, jerky, dried fruit, cheese and cracker packets, peanut butter sandwiches or packets of peanut butter and crackers.
