The Diary of Anne Frank at the Lakewood Playhouse (In Person)
Saturday, April 16, 8:00 p.m.

Directed by Melanie Gladstone with collaboration and support with historical/religious context from Cantor Fine and Joel Henken. In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit, and determination. An impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic, The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence—their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief. This is a new adaptation for a new generation. The play runs from Friday, April 15–Sunday, May 8. For more information or to purchase tickets, go here.

Temple Hikers—Little Si near North Bend
Saturday, April 23, 8:00 a.m.

Join Temple Hikers for our first hike of the year! “Big” Mount Si is a strenuous hike, but its smaller neighbor, Little Si, is usually good for most hikers, even those with limited hiking experience. I have seen families, little ones in backpacks, and pets, all enjoying this 5-mile hike. It’s a serene walk in the forest and one of our group’s favorite hikes. There is a steep final section to reach the summit, and the reward is the vista and lunch at the top. You can find great photos and a hike description on the Washington Trails Association’s website. We will meet at the temple at 8:00 a.m. Those who prefer to meet at the trailhead can find permit information here and meet us at the trail at 9:30 a.m. We should return to Temple by 2:00 p.m. RSVP to David Wheeler at templehikers@comcast.net, and feel free to call (253) 312-8563 if you have questions or concerns. Bring lunch, water, and the rest of your ten essentials for hiking.

Can’t make this hike? Our next hike is Snoquera Falls on May 21. This is a beautiful 6-mile loop that includes an old-growth forest, a waterfall, and a minor creek crossing. Please check Shabbat Shalom prior to the hike for updates and dates of future outings.

Havdalah and Pizza Party (In Person)
Saturday, April 23, 7:00 p.m.

The service will be followed by a pizza party sponsored by Sisterhood—remember BYOB! Donations accepted. Please RSVP here by April 20!

Temple Beautification Work Party (In Person)
Sunday, April 24, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Join us for fresh air, exercise, amazing company and refreshments—all while working to keep the outside of our temple in great shape! Silvia Fradkin is taking over for Lin Spellman who has worked tirelessly to keep the outside of Temple Beth El in great shape. Our current project will be to spread lots of mulch by the parking strips. If you are interested, please contact Silvia Fradkin at (253) 313-6779 or stfradkin991@gmail.com.

Arrivals: A Seattle Love Story
Monday, May 2, 7:00 p.m.

The Seattle Jewish Theater Company is performing the historically-based play, Arrivals: A Seattle Love Story, at Temple Beth El. Written and directed by SJTC artistic director Art Feinglass, and based on historical events, Arrivals is a Romeo and Juliet love story that unfolds against the backdrop of early-1900’s Seattle and the arrival of the first Sephardic Jewish immigrants.

The year is 1902 when Marco Cordova, a poor young Jew from Turkey, comes to Seattle, the first Sephardic Jew ever to arrive in the city, determined to make his fortune. He soon meets Bayla Keigelman, a fragile young Jewish woman from Russia, who is haunted by memories of a vicious pogrom. Despite the cultural gulf between them, they fall in love but find they must confront forces that declare their love forbidden. To RSVP, please go here. This performance is free and the event is sponsored by Lamed Vav.

TBE is coordinating 20 sack lunches for the first Thursday of each month. Money and food donations are needed for us to fulfill this obligation!

Please email Mady Plumer at madshell33@icloud.com or call her at (253) 377-4615. This event is sponsored by Sisterhood, but we need participation by any interested TBE member (if you have contacts in any other organization who might be willing to help out, please forward this message to them).

The outreach from some of our temple members as well as individual community members and local churches has been terrific so far, but this is a year long commitment and support is needed on an ongoing basis.
