Havdalah (Zoom)
Saturday, January 8, 7:30 PM

Please
celebrate Zoom Havdalah here.
Zoom Meeting ID: 320 3406 647.

What will I need?
Just yourself! However, if you would like to participate in blessings at home, Havdalah blessings are said over wine, besamim (fragrant spices), and a braided Havdalah candle.

What if I don't have those things?
If you don't have a Havdalah candle at home, you can use two candles (or even two matches) joining the flames as the blessing is recited. And if you do not have wine, it can be substituted with something you might use to celebrate or offer to a guest, perhaps coffee or tea. And, most importantly, if you don't have any of these things, just come to say blessings and be together. You can find the
Havdalah blessings here.

Upcoming Events

Finding Comfort in Uncomfortable Prayer (OPEN TO ALL MEMBERS)
Sunday, January 9, 2:00–3:30 PM

Open to all TBE members! Please join us for this inspirational presentation by Dr. Madelyn Katz sponsored by Sisterhood. Let's be honest—everyone has had a moment of discomfort when they realized they didn't necessarily agree with the words in a prayer. It’s difficult to know how to respond to that reaction, but it’s a very common and healthy response; it means we are really paying attention to what the prayers are saying. In Dr. Katz’s session, a number of those responses will be uncovered and participants will be given an opportunity to share their personal moments of discomfort if they wish. Discussion will then turn to how to respond to that discomfort and turn it into a meaningful and prayerful experience. To register for this event, please go
here. The Zoom link will be provided in your confirmation email.

Temple Beth El Beit Sefer Parent Check-In Get Together (Zoom)

Sunday, January 9, 11:30 AM and Thursday, January 13, 6:30 PM

Please join us on either Sunday, January 9 or Thursday, January 13! The open house sessions will be held on Zoom here (meeting ID: 368 634 6369).

Rose Desena Presents: Plays and Pizza! (Zoom)
Monday, January 10, 3:30–5:00 PM PST

Come out (virtually) for a great evening of theater! You’re invited to an evening of fine short plays. The program is directed and hosted by Art Feinglass (for the New York-based Plays and Pizza) and features works by six playwrights—including a play by Art himself—performed by 14 talented actors. The collection of 10 minute-ish plays will be performed via Zoom. It’s free and all are welcome—but it’s BYOP (bring your own pizza). To attend, please
join on Zoom (meeting ID: 810 1013 8459).

Art Feinglass will also be directing the play Arrivals which is being performed at TBE on May 2, 2022—keep an eye out for more information in the months to come!

Opportunities

Join the Temple Beth El Purim Players in 2022
Have you wanted to perform in a show but have only been singing in the shower? There are many short speaking roles and three choruses for everyone—you don’t have to be a trained singer to enjoy the fun and participate! We’ll have several rehearsals, all in-person, on Wednesday nights from 7:15–8:30 PM.

Rehearsal dates include:
January 12, 19, 26 • February 2, 9, 16, 23 • March 2

The first dress rehearsal is on March 9 from 6:30–9:00 PM. For more information, or to join the cast, please email Cantor Fine at
cantorfine@tbetacoma.org.

Audition Notice for the Lakewood Playhouse
Sunday, February 13 and Monday, February 14

Auditions are opening for the performance of The Diary of Anne Frank directed by Melanie Gladstone (the play runs from April 15 through May 8). In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit and determination.

For more information, you can reach out to Heather Hinds at
hhinds@lakewoodplayhouse.org. You can also sign up for an audition directly here.

Join the Sisterhood-sponsored “Temple Beth El Congregants” team

Sisterhood of Temple Beth El seeks Nourish Pierce County food bank volunteers! Please join our Sisterhood-sponsored “Temple Beth El Congregants” team. Now that we've proved ourselves as an awesome and reliable team (on November 9 and December 13), the Nourish PC Volunteer Coordinator, Amber Walker, requires each of us to register online. Please contact team leader Marlene Motola at (253) 297-1948 if you would like to join our team. The next two scheduled dates are the second Monday of January and February (if interest remains high, we'll seek this time slot for future months):

  • Monday, January 10 from 10:00 AM–noon
  • Monday, February 14 from 10:00 AM–noon

For more information on what is expected and how to register, please email volunteer@nourishpc.org. Our team’s name is “Temple Beth El Congregants.” Please send the required photo of your COVID-19 vaccination card to that same email address. Thank you all in advance, and a big thank you to those who have volunteered already and to those who plan to continue, as able!

Adult education registration now open!
Online registration is now open for the 2022 spring semester of adult education. While some classes continue or repeat from fall, others are new—like the joys of Hebrew calligraphy or learning more about Zohar. (If you have to ask, you need the class.) One class begins in January, but most begin in February. There will also be Wednesday drop-in Stitch and Kvetch opportunities beginning February 2, and Sunday Simcha sessions beginning in March. As a courtesy to the instructors and presenters, please try not to wait until the last minute to register. Go ahead, click here, now.

Religious School Reminder
Religious school resumes online on Sunday, January 9. Classes will meet at the same time as they did in the fall. Effective January 2, 2022, all children ages 5+ must have proof of COVID-19 vaccination on file in order to attend in-person classes or activities. Please email a copy or photo of their record to Olivia at olivia@tbetacoma.org.
