Havdalah
Saturday, October 30th, 7:30 p.m. (Zoom)
Please follow the link to celebrate Zoom Havdalah: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/3203406647. Meeting ID: 320 3406 647.
What will I need? Just yourself! However, if you would like to participate in blessings at home, Havdalah blessings are said over wine, besamim (fragrant spices), and a braided Havdalah candle.
What if I don't have those things? If you don't have a Havdalah candle at home, you can use two candles (or even two matches) joining the flames as the blessing is recited. And if you do not have wine, it can be substituted with something you might use to celebrate or offer to a guest, perhaps coffee or tea. And, most importantly, if you don't have any of these things, just come to say blessings and be together. Please find a link to the Havdalah blessings here.

Interfaith Solidarity Against Attacks on Places of Worship
Sunday, October 31st at 2:00 p.m.
In light of the rash of attacks on places of worship, faith leaders will hold a solidarity gathering at Tacoma on October 31, 2021, at 2:00 p.m., to condemn violence or attacks on places of worship. The gathering will take place at Tacoma Community College, 6501 S 19th St, Tacoma, WA 98466 (exact building location at TCC will be emailed prior to Sunday). Speakers will include leaders from the targeted houses of worship, along with faith leaders and elected leaders.
On Sunday, October 24, 2021, a suspicious fire burned a Catholic church in Tacoma. This follows the recent arson attack at a mosque in Tacoma, break-in and vandalism at a Mountlake Terrace mosque and at a Federal Way Sikh gurudwara, aggravated assault on a Buddhist nun outside a Buddhist temple in Tacoma, and vandalism at Catholic churches in Seattle.
On October 24, an early morning fire caused significant damage to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish in Tacoma, and the fire is being investigated as suspicious. Other recent attacks on places of worship include the following:
- October 19, 2021 – break-in and attack on religiously-significant material at Masjid Umar Al-Farooq (the mosque at Mountlake Terrace)
- October 11, 2021 – fire identified as arson at Islamic Center of Tacoma
- October 10, 2021 – vandalism at Saint Edward Church in Seattle
- September 21, 2021 – aggravated assault on Buddhist nun at Khmer Theravadin Buddhist Temple in Tacoma
- September 2021– break-in and attack on religiously significant material on Khalsa Gurmat Center in Federal Way
- August 2021 – vandalism at Saint Benedict Church in Seattle
To address this spate of attacks, faith leaders from the affected places of worship—along with faith leaders across the area—are standing in solidarity to condemn any targeting of houses of worship and to emphasize our unity and resilience.

Jews and Climate Justice: Building a United Front (Online)
Tuesday, November 9, 11:00 a.m. PST | 6:00 p.m. GMT
Jews have a long history of bold action for justice. To help to create a sustainable future, Jews must build alliances with all peoples. However, the long history of anti-Semitism, racism, and genocides against many peoples has damaged and divided us. We need to understand and heal from the damage to build the relationships we need for a powerful, united movement to sustain all life. In this workshop, we will invite you to:
- Gain perspective about the particular role that anti-Semitism has played in dividing progressive movements
- Share your story as a Jew or ally to Jews working for climate justice
- Practice paired listening tools for alliance building with all peoples
- Learn the approaches used by Sustaining All Life and United to End Racism to heal from the damage of oppression, increase our effectiveness in the climate justice movement, and prevent burnout

Experience Leonard Cohen at the CJM
Sunday, November 21 at 2:00 p.m.
A CJM Educator will give an overview of the exhibition, sharing both the biography of Leonard Cohen as well as how his work inspired and informed the four artists on view. Via installation and archival images, we will engage in conversation about the power of words. Leonard Cohen’s words gave voice to the human condition, in all of its grace and imperfection—and to this day, they continue to inspire generations of artists, musicians, and writers.
This inspiration is at the heart of Experience Leonard Cohen: a series of four solo exhibitions that present immersive and intimate artworks by contemporary artists George Fok, Judy Chicago, Candice Breitz, and Marshall Trammell, all inspired by the life and work of Leonard Cohen (1934–2016), the influential musician, man of letters, and global icon from Montréal, Canada.
Cost is $7 per screen—how many can you fit on your couch? Maximum of 25 screens. If there’s enough interest, a second showing may be available at 3:00 p.m. To purchase your virtual ticket, visit tinyurl.com/tbesisterhoodsquare and enter $7 as your donation amount. For more information, contact Marlene Motola at mmotolapnwad@gmail.com.

Fire at St. Charles
Early on Sunday, October 24, a fire at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish caused considerable damage to the parish office building—fortunately, no one was injured. Please go to https://www.osvhub.com/saintcharlesb/funds/parish-office-rebuilding to make a donation.

Help re-build the Islamic Center of Tacoma after arson
As many of you have heard, the Islamic Center of Tacoma was a victim of arson on October 11th. While congregants of the mosque were gathered for evening prayer inside, an arsonist lit their building on fire. Fortunately, nobody was injured. However, their place of worship will need to be rebuilt.
Many of you have reached out to see how you can support our Muslim neighbors. Currently, there is an online fundraiser to help cover the costs associated with rebuilding. You can donate at LaunchGood: click here to donate.
