Upcoming Events

Havdalah
Saturday, October 2nd, 7:30 p.m. (Zoom)

Please follow the link to celebrate Zoom Havdalah: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/3203406647. Meeting ID: 320 3406 647.

What will I need? - Just yourself! However, if you would like to participate in blessings at home, Havdalah blessings are said over wine, besamim (fragrant spices), and a braided Havdalah candle.

What if I don't have those things? - If you don't have a Havdalah candle at home, you can use two candles (or even two matches) joining the flames as the blessing is recited. And if you do not have wine, it can be substituted with something you might use to celebrate or offer to a guest, perhaps coffee or tea. And, most importantly, if you don't have any of these things, just come to say blessings and be together. Please find a link to the Havdalah blessings here.

Jewish Book Club
Tuesday, October 5 at 11:30 a.m. in the temple social hall and on Zoom.

The book club will discuss “Send For Me” by Lauren Fox. Bring a lunch or a snack and join us in person or virtually. Join us on Zoom here:
https://tinyurl.com/tbebookclub.

“Send For Me” is an achingly beautiful work of historical fiction that moves between Germany on the eve of World War II and present day Wisconsin, unspooling a thread of love, longing, and the ceaseless push and pull of family.

Annelise is a dreamer: imagining her future while working at her parents' popular bakery in Feldenheim, Germany, anticipating all the delicious possibilities yet to come. There are rumors that anti-Jewish sentiment is on the rise, but Annelise and her parents can't quite believe that it will affect them; they're hardly religious at all. But as Annelise falls in love, marries, and gives birth to her daughter, the dangers grow closer: a brick thrown through her window; a childhood friend who cuts ties with her; customers refusing to patronize the bakery. Luckily Annelise and her husband are given the chance to leave for America, but they must go without her parents, whose future and safety are uncertain.

Two generations later, in a small Midwestern city, Annelise's granddaughter, Clare, is a young woman newly in love. But when she stumbles upon a trove of her grandmother's letters from Germany, she sees the history of her family's sacrifices in a new light, and suddenly she's faced with an impossible choice: the past, or her future. A novel of dazzling emotional richness, Send for Me is a major departure for this acclaimed author, an epic and intimate exploration of mothers and daughters, duty and obligation, hope and forgiveness.
