Youth Programming
Through youth programming, Temple Beth El strives to facilitate the transition and integration of Temple youth into the adult Jewish community, to give them opportunities to develop emerging skills, to continue their participation in our learning community, and empower them to invest in our future as Am Yisrael. We hope to accomplish the following:
- Foster a strong Jewish identity in our youth.
- Support our children as they develop into adults.
- Assist our young adults in becoming part of the larger Jewish community.
- Empower our young adults to take an active part in synagogue life.
- Help our children to develop independent decision-making and leadership skills.
Youth programming consists of social and educational activities that are organized into formal and informal events. Through these programs we help our young adults stay connected to the Jewish community and Temple Beth El and make friendships that last a lifetime. Youth activities are organized into the following areas:
- Preschool–7th grade social activities
- Beth El Temple Youth for 8th–12th graders (BETY)
- Israel trips and camperships—Camp Kalsman, Camp Solomon Schechter, NFTY in Israel and other camp-based Israel trips, and special events
- BBYO—national Jewish youth movement
Madrichol Program
Note: Madrichol is a portmanteau word combining the gendered word “madrich” (guide) with the word “kol” (all). It is used for the collective group of teens who serve as guides and assistants in the Religious Education Program. “Madrich” is gendered masculine, “madrichah” is gendered feminine, and “madricheh” is ungendered.
Madrichol will be responsible for assisting in some of the non-teaching aspects of classroom management, helping with arts and crafts set-up and clean up, snacks, running errands to the office, and other facilitating needs that the teacher requests. Madrichol will also be utilized to help students one-on-one under the supervision of the teachers. When in the classrooms, madrichol will be expected to assist in the instructional process as needed by the teacher, helping individual students needing personal attention. Teachers are expected to coordinate with madrichol before the beginning of each session to ensure that they have meaningful ways to support the class. Madrichol will be paid a stipend based on their grade level. For more information on becoming part of our Madrichol Program or to sign up for the program, please contact Olivia at olivia@tbetacoma.org or (253) 564-7101.
Beth El Temple Youth
BETY (Beth El Temple Youth) is our youth group where tweens and teens can have fun and be Jewish together.
BETY is the place to be if you love adventure, cooking, learning, hiking and more, with regular events, social gatherings, and service opportunities. BETY provides you with opportunities to engage in leadership, and to help engage our youth presence at temple.
We have monthly, in-person gatherings, including game nights for the entire community. For questions, please contact our youth advisor, Moshe, at youthadvisor@tbetacoma.org.
